The Scoop

  • In fourth grade someone got the bright idea of cutting lunch to an outrageous 15 minutes (as if going to a year-round school without a cafeteria wasn't enough--we ate at our desks and were served by mobile carts in the hall). To get the slow eaters (me) up to speed, our teachers implemented a charming little policy called "Shovel Time."

The first nine minutes would pass normally. Then as the tenth approached, Miss Stauffer (a feathered-haired gal who drove a Camaro, loved Little River Band...and apparently still teaches at Hollydale Elementary) would yell, "Do you know what time it is?!" The class would manically shriek back, "SHOVEL TIME!!!" Talking was absolutely forbidden the final five minutes—it was a deathly silent scarf fest.

I don't know if I've ever been the same since. But as a nod to this classy ritual, I've adopted the humble scooping implement as my rating system's icon. Shovel on!

Jeff

damn that looks awesome. I need a few more meals in a day.

Krista

Jeff: Ihawan can be many meals in one. I ate some for lunch and then I ate leftovers for dinner that same night. It's hard to get tired of pork.

Tried to go here last night, but was closed. Went to place next door. I had brought a Filipino friend, who insisted I go after I said Filipino food is my least fav in the world. You know, after last nights meal, I am sticking with my view. Sickly sweet meat is just not my gig I guess.

Krista

driggs: You wouldn't be the first person to tell me about your non-like of Filipino food. I live with a Filipino food disliker who's half-Filipino. As you can see, I'm crazy about it, but I will concede that it doesn't jump out at you like other S.E. Asian cuisines, and yeah, some of it is just kind of bad and/or stewed to death.

Ah...I just realized you said least favorite in the world, not merely least favorite Asian food (which I could understand). Now that's harsh.

I don't hate them, but I feel kind of indifferent to Eastern European and Scandinavian food. I'm really not crazy about Italian(American), either. I'd take a million plates of pancit over one bowl of pasta.

My family and my friends love ihawan. Love the food and the service is great! Be it Germans, Russian, Jews, irish and ordinary americans. We go there as a treat and find that the food costs are so reasonable. My friends and family favorites are: Pork BBQ on a stick, longaniza de recado (spicy), Mechado, Lechon Kawali and the whole Pig Knuckle, ukoy (which they stopped making), fried catfish, fried tofu with crispy pork, pansit palabok, inihaw na eggplant with the shrimp paste and the bitter gord or ampalaya cooked with shrimp and eggs. We eat up a storm when we are there and always leave so satisfied, especially when we eat their desserts like the fried spring roll wrapped banana or what they call turon and their halohalo especial. As for rice, my family and friends are not big on rice so we usually eat without it. I personally like spicy so I always ask for thai bird peppers to mix with the fish sauce on the table.

Beth Brucker: good to hear from an Ihawan fan. For some reason, I really think Filipino cuisine is love or hate. No one ever seems so-so on it.

samantha

Visit Ihawan's website you will be amazed... this is so great www.ihawan2.com

Krista

samantha: hmm...is this shilling? I don't even mind in this case because I'm an Ihawan-lover.
